The Forest of Poles
Brockley School |
This project began with Y3 pupils building large-scale temporary
sculptures and dens in the playground.
The Forest of Poles is a new permanent structure in the playground
that enables all sorts of play and learning to take place within
it.
Made up of a geometric grid of 20 large steel tubes, pupils make
their own temporary 'rooms' and mazes by hooking fabric screens
between the poles. In the sunshine the structure makes dramatic
shadows along the ground and the blue safety surface creates a comfortable
‘carpet’ to sit on.
The Forest of Poles has provided a focus for many curriculum activities
including drama, story telling, geography and science. The Laban
Centre have recently developed a dance project with pupils using
the poles as inspiration.
Commissioned by Brockley School and Creating
Success EiC Action Zone, Lewisham.
20 steel poles each 2m x 200mm, paint, safety surface, Ripstop screens
and fixings.
